Plans are in the offing for Creating Funds for Broadband
There is a to avail of about seven million pounds worth of funds from the government for broadband facilities in Northumberland and this plan will be presented by the end of the year.
Broadband delivery UK (BDUK) is supervising the broadband policy of the government and the County Council of Northumberland has already been assigned seven million pounds from a 530 million pounds fund that had been set aside for high-speed broadband.
In order to get this grant, the Northumberland County Council would have to present a Local Broadband Plan by the 31st December such that it would match the grants as well as the extra and important funding by the private segments too.
As per reports of the meeting that was held the previous Monday by the county council’s executive, it had defined the Local Broadband Plan of Northumberland as concentrating on providing the three main essentials:
• The development of fibre and wire-free based broadband facilities in Northumberland
• Demand stimulation, meaning that it would persuade more residents and businesses to utilize high-speed broadband and
• Digital inclusion, implying that more people would have the facilities to access the Internet. As of now more than one out of five people do not have access or have never accessed the Internet.
The match-funding donation would be added to the medium term fiscal plan and would as such be taken into consideration in the next executive meeting that was to be held on the 9th of January and another meeting of the full council that was scheduled for the 22nd of February.
The statement also included that other than the 530 million pounds grant, Defra had started a rural funding of 20 million pounds for broadband such that it could assist homes and business houses in the rural regions to obtain super-fast broadband.
The last date for the council to inform the government of their interest is set for the 31st of January 2012 and the council is busy trying to get interested groups to bid for the funding.
However, the requirements are quite high throughout the country and because the fund is not sufficient matching funds from private parties are absolutely necessary.
