O2 says Broadband consumers waste 700 million pounds

Monday, September 6th 2010

A recent survey made by O2 has reported that millions of broadband consumers are wasting money for high download speeds which they do not need. O2 found that majority of the people only need 8 MB for their online activity but pay for a package offering up to 20 MB.

O2 says that if customers pay only for the services they use, broadband expenditure of a massive £700 million per year can be saved.

Majority of the survey respondents said that they were using internet only for low bandwidth activities such as e-mailing, browsing and social networking. Very few steam multimedia content and only 3 to 5 percentage of the people download music and movies which are activities that require greater downloading capability.

Felix Geyr of O2 said that their industry should offer services according to the people's need and should help them understand exactly what they should be buying. He also added that marketing based solely on speed should be avoided.

O2 was recently shortlisted in the Best Broadband ISP category for the PC Pro awards 2010.
