Leicestershire County Council arranges GBP 4 Million for superfast broadband project
Most of the rural areas in Britain do not have internet access. The government has taken some measures to put an end to this pathetic situation. One of them is setting up of the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) program. The primary objective of BDUK is to make available at least 2 Mbps throughout the UK at the earliest. Another task is to provide next generation broadband to 90% of the country in the next three years. Apart from the government fund, the Leicestershire County Council has earmarked GBP 4 million for the project, which will benefit 19, 000 residents in the county. The government has approved the plans of the council. Already there is a government sanction for GBP 3.14 million for the objective. ‘BT Broadband’ and ‘Virgin Media’ have made good progress in the installation work in the region. But places like Bosworth, Harborough, Melton and Hinckley etc are still far behind with very poor internet connection. David Parson of the Council stated that high speed communication access can enhance the county’s stature in the economical world. Every effort should be made to improve the conditions in the rural areas because they can play a large role in the building up of the nation. An additional GBP 300 million has been sanctioned for the county by the cabinet to take care of the interest of the rural areas. Byron Rhodes of the Melton Borough Council, who is also a member of the cabinet, advised other district councils to take the example of the council and invest in the proposal for super fast broadband.
