Is The Plan Of The Government To Provide Faster Broadband Beginning To Crumble?
Chancellor George Osborne seemed to have given a lot of emphasis to the delivery of high speed broadband in the UK during the October 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review created by the coalition government. The chancellor declared that the government would allot a grant of 530 million pounds of public investment to augment private funding for the next generation network systems. Mr. Osborne also announced that in another three years the country would have the most excellent high speed broadband facilities in Europe. He said that they and the network operators would show special interest to the remote rural regions that are not easy to reach. This they anticipate would help of the people in every local authority would be able to access super-fast broadband connectivity. They have selected four regions for a trial run and also because these regions could be the models for both public as well as private sectors to join hands to offer super-fast network connectivity to the rural areas of Britain. The four regions chosen were North Yorkshire, Highlands and Islands, Herefordshire and Cumbria. The core objective of these trials was to assist the government and the Internet Service Providers to get to comprehend the challenges that could be related with providing the broadband facilities in the non-metropolitan regions. Every trial run was assigned an amount of up to 17 million pounds from the total 530 million pounds kitty. This grant is being disbursed by the Broadband delivery UK which is a government body that has been set up to create framework contract through which the providers need to bid once to be assigned anywhere between thirty and forty prospective broadband delivery ventures. It is expected that this could reduce the costs of procurement for the local offices and the ISPs. It is over a year now since the government revealed its plans of rolling out super fast broadband and it is rather lucid that they have quite a number of serious issues that prevent the provision of universal broadband in the country.
