Good scope for the Welsh to avail high speed internet
The Welsh government has extended the initiative meant for eliminating the broadband ‘notspots’.
The Broadband Support System (BSS) of the of the company allows households, commercial organizations and third sector establishments to avail a grant of GBP 1,000 to get high speed internet service.
The project, started in 2010 was to be closed in the current year. However the Welsh Minister in charge Edwina Hart has declared that the project will continue. That will enable more people to take advantage and put in their application.
Edwina Hart informed that the public response for the scheme was excellent, and that more than 2000 requests were approved. Another 230 were being assessed.
Among the approved, 16 were community projects consisting of 918 homes. A substantial part of the GBP 2 million fund will be allotted for this scheme itself. 10 more community plans are being considered to meet the needs of another 1055 properties.
The current initiative will run parallel to the ‘Next Generation Broadband for Wales’ project.
The UK government has already set aside GBP 56.9 million for the improvement of broadband services in Wales. ‘European Regional Development Fund’ will be approached for further funding if necessary.
Mrs. Hart said that the extension of the scheme has been done for the benefit of the Welsh population. They have been asked to make use of the opportunity and send their application without any delay.
