GBP 30m Kick-start for Plymouth Superfast Broadband
The businesses and homes of Plymouth has welcomed the announcement by the government that it would be giving GBP 30 million towards delivering superfast fibre optic broadband across Devon and Somerset.
Meanwhile, the Broadband Delivery UK (widely known as BDUK), which is the body responsible for overseeing the superfast broadband funding, said that the bid placed forth by the Local Economic Parternship (LEP) of the Heart of the South West has been successful.
Incidentally, Plymouth City Council that has submitted a joint bid to the superfast broadband funding agency, is part of the LEP.
It is expected that the funding from BDUK would prompt investment into faster broadband internet access in remote areas, turning it highly attractive for the providers of infrastructure to deploy improvements in urban locations such as Plymouth.
The project would be paving way for a superfast broadband service boasting of connection speeds exceeding 20Mbps to be rolled out to 85 per cent of the homes and businesses, with a minimum speed of 2Mbps to every premise by 2015.
The Plymouth City Council leader, Councillor Vivien Pengelly said that the council would be providing the broadband companies with the incentive to raise their game in the city.
