The Northumberland County Council (NCC) has presented the government with their local plan to enhance broadband connection facilities throughout the county. The plan provides information about how the authority in the locality proposes to better the condition of Internet connectivity throughout the region. The county had earlier been assigned an amount of seven million pounds by the government body called the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) to enhance broadband connections. However, it was the responsibility of the county to show how they planned to utilize this amount, if it had to be released. In addition the council would also have to put in a minimum amount of seven million pounds for the venture either from its own kitty, European funding firms or from private enterprises. As per the Northumberland Gazette, the local authority plans to concentrate on three main issues namely that of providing wire-free and fibre-based broadband network, instigating more people in the locality to make use of the new technology and by making it possible for more people to be in a position to gain accessibility of the Internet. It has been noted that over one out of five people in Northumberland have never had the chance to surf the Internet, whereas 8.4 million adults across the country have not utilized the web. Nevertheless 40 million people in the country are regular Internet users and three fourths of them use the Internet daily. Once they have presented the government with their local plan for broadband enhancement the NCC would think of means to make the seven million pounds in it medium term fiscal proposals and this would be put up for discussion by the executive on the 9th of January and by the full council on the 22nd of February. Other than an application for the grant from BDUK, the NCC is also trying to bid for a portion of the 20 million pounds grant from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The main objective of this funding is to assist homes and business enterprises in the more hard to reach regions to obtain access to high speed broadband connectivity. The local office is presently trying to get those parties who seem to display an interest to put in an application for this venture before 31st January which has been set as the last date for sending in applications. In a report that was presented at a meeting of the executive not long ago, the NCC elucidated that it was extremely clear that the national requirement would be high and because of the limited funds the counties would have to match the grants from private organizations.
