Fast broadband campaign picking up fast in counties
The computer users of Mid-Somerset have been asked by the county councils to participate in the campaign for making available super fast broadband for the county. At least 10,000 households are required to put in writing their demand for the high speed connectivity for Devon and Somerset. At present only 4% of the Somerset population are able to get the super-fast broadband. But at peak times the speed is very low. Such a situation has to be stopped. The objective of the scheme is to provide 85% of the people with 24 Mbps by 2015 and the remaining with 2 Mbps. Another objective is to ensure super fast to the whole county by 2020. Every user is asked to fill up a simple questionnaire. He has to inform about his present online activity, the speed available in his premise, what speed he may require and how much he can pay. After filling up all the particulars, it must be posted directly. If at least 10,000 users resopond, it will have a good impact on the authorities. The government has already provided GBP 31 million through Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) for the project. Devon and Somerset County councils will be contributing GBP 10 million each. More funds can be expected from the government based on the response of the residents. That is why the council members are urging the residents to expedite their replies.
