Enhancements in Broadband Connectivity to Begin in the Highlands and Islands in the Year 2013

Tuesday, January 17th 2012

The venture popularly called the Highlands and Islands super-fast Broadband project would probably be the biggest of the non-metropolitan ventures of its kind in the UK. This is one of the projects in which only one among the four major contenders for BDUK ventures Cable and wireless, Commendium, Fujitsu and BT, only BT seems to be in the game. The ventures would probably cost between 200 and 300 million pounds, and this would include the finances that have been given by both private as well as public segments. The signing of the agreement is anticipated this august with outlines of ideas of how it would be implemented soon after. Probably it would be a combination of FTTC/FTTP/fixed lines and satellite facilities. If complete fibre expenses are to be taken into consideration, there are no chances that it would be restricted in being carried out. There is a population of 380,000 residents who live within a radius of 38,500 sq km. There have been earlier broadband investments in this region when the 70million pounds wherein the Pathfinder North had delivered fundamental broadband facilities to many hard to reach places. In 2005 there was also the Broadband for Scotland venture that assisted BT in the installation of basic 0.5 to 2Mbps speeds in certain exchanges. There was the more restricted Exchange Activate product in about 148 exchanges too. A lot of speeds have happened upgrades from the year 2005 onwards, especially for people whose lines were short such that they speeds could be quicker. If it happens that BT is the only one that bids and bags the contract there are certain to be a whole lot of finger pointing. However it looks like the numbers do not add up for other operators and also for towns that prefer to avail of broadband without the help of the providers, probably they could go ahead and implement their own project. In the Virgin Media speed upgrades, a lot of the issues that are being faced to bring in finances to enhance broadband have been pointed out.
