Communication Minister impressed by the progress of broadband installation in counties
47 broadband projects, including that of Kent and Medway councils have been approved by the government. At least 15 of these projects are ready with 24 Mbps for homes and businesses. Ed Vaizey, the communications minister stated that local authorities can apply for a part of the GBP 100 million European funding to realize their broadband plans. This is apart from the GBP 630 million set aside by the government to accomplish the Chancellor George Osbourne’s dream of UK becoming the best super fast network in Europe by 2015. The objective is to have super fast broadband for 90% of the population and at least 2 Mbps for others. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also have been provided the fund. Vaizey was impressed by the councils’ interest in providing the latest technology to the people, which will help in communication facilities even to the remote areas. There is no need to say that it ensures economic growth. To be eligible for the fund, the councils need to complete a broadband plan. The details are available online. The Department of Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) said that 32 projects are yet to get the approval of the plan. Work was progressing slowly in 3 areas. They are: Bath and North East Somerset. Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Liverpool, Knowsley, St. Helens, Sefton, Wirral.
