BT not interested in doing away with copper networks

The Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) program of the UK government has two fundamental objectives:

• Provide at least 2Mb broadband through out the UK.
• Make available next generation broadband to about 90% of the population by 2015.

‘BT Broadband’ is one of the service providers entrusted with the responsibility of achieving the above objectives.

BT took up the challenge and introduced ‘BT Infinity service’ to use fibre technology to meet the needs. The work is progressing so fast that BT is confident of achieving the target a year ahead of schedule.

But BT has not yet discarded the old copper networks. Sean Williams of the company informed that copper will remain as a permanent feature of the BT Network System, because still there are plenty of people interested in copper telephony than broadband.

BT is in the process of bringing next generation broadband to the Selkirk, which is one among the 47 Scottish towns selected by BT for providing faster copper broadband services. The effort has been praised by Selkirk’s local Chamber of Trade.

When the work gets completed in summer, 11,000 properties in Selkirk and Hawick and about 186,000 persons in the whole of Scotland will be benefited.

Gordon Edgar of the Local Chamber of Trade is happy at the development. It is inevitable that the businesses have to be provided with the most modern tools to enable them to compete in the national and international market. In fact, they are necessary even for survival.
