Broadband Customers Can Avail FTTP On Demand
With the digital scene in the UK going in for a lot of changes, OpenReach had raised I bet with their newest product trial, this is expected to see FTTP ON Demand being introduced in spring the next year. This product is similar to the one that id being delivered in certain regions, but it will be made available as a choice to people in regions where the OpenReach street cabinet would be offering a FTTC facility.
People were not sure about whether the overlay system would reduce FTTP delivery of OpenReach. However that will go ahead as also the specific extension of the Multiple Dwelling units in flats and apartments and their objective of 25% of BT’s fibre being delivered via FTTP. The on demand feature of the new item would imply that it would be the customers who decide whether they wish to make the numbers bigger.
More trials after the success of the trial carried out in St. Agnes in Cornwall will be conducted in summer this year. The FTTP which is already offering speeds of 110Mbps would be offering three fold speeds at 330Mbps this current year with more trials of 1Gbps. One of the main differences is that the FTTP gets completely rid of the local loops of copper, therefore when a user asks and pays for 110Mbps speeds they will be offered just that and the release of the Fibre Voice Access would help people to stop using the copper loop if they so require.
However users would have to pay a price for the on demand feature though the cost is yet to be mentioned. It would take after the GEA pricing when it is a monthly payment and this pricing is well known to users. The costs would be 36.36 pounds where there is the OpenReach sector that offers 110Mbps download speeds and 30Mbps upload speeds. The cost has not been declared for the 330Mbps segment, but would probably be priced at something like 80 pounds. The most significant problem would be the installation costs, because since fibre only used from the FTTC street cabinet, it would cost less to e installed, but the installation cost of the fibre-based Ethernet solutions would cost between 50p0 and 1500 pounds. In this case there are options that the amount can be spaced out over a period of time rather than make a full down payment.
The propositions for the BDUK ventures are vast and as of now there seems to be options to deliver FTTC to service 90% of the residential homes and businesses and in those regions where FTTC is slow, they could in all probability offer the FTTP ON Demand to the companies. What a lot of people do not comprehend is that there are restrictions on how the BDUK funding can be used. For connectivity to the houses the BDUK and the council funding must not be used in the last mile for the users, however it can be used for the digital hub and other features of the ventures. This means that if a local office chooses the full FTTP for homes, then there are chances that the business partner would have to bear a major share of the investment.
For those who do not know it, BT has formally stated that an FTTC item will be released in spring with download speeds of up to 80Mbps and upload speeds of 20Mbps. However the announcement of the FTTP On Demand seems to outshine this in spite of the fact that the delivery of the FTTC did not prevent the fibre deployment, it was not expected till a couple of years later.
With the introduction of the item the coming year, it would be nice to know what the demand for it would be and apparently the cost may be a hurdle for a lot of people. Nevertheless if one’s home is in a locality where one can avail of excellent broadband speeds, maybe it would be worth considering.
