Advertising Supervisory Body Penalises BT for Asserting Without Proof That They Provided the Most Reliable Wireless Connectivity in the UK
The supervisory authority for Advertising has penalized BT who claimed that they were the most reliable Wireless connection in the UK. The authority stated that they should not repeat this without solid proof or qualification to back their assertions. The Advertising Standard Authority (ASA) had stated that BT had not been able to provide evidence to prove that the real experience that users had on the Internet was the most reliable compared to their rivals. The ASA also said that BT had not been able to clarify that the statement that they released referred just to their BT Home Hub 3 router. In their advertisement on television concerning this statement, people are given the notion that BT offers the most reliable wireless Internet experience. The tests conducted by BT did in fact affirm that their Home Hub 3 router was in all ways more reliable when it was a matter concerning the maintenance of the connectivity in spite of disturbances from gadgets that did not have Wi-Fi like the baby monitors. Nevertheless the ASA stated that the advertisement hinted that the broadband facilities provided by BT was the most excellent concerning competitive signals and that it was unclear whether these mentioned signals were from non-Wi-Fi equipments. As per the ruling of the ASA, it was stated that the though BT’s intentions were not to claim what the advertisement inferred, people could get the wrong impression and understand that BT offered the most reliable wireless connection in the UK. It said that BT was not able to provide evidence that the online experience in fact were really the most reliable and also as the advertisement did not have the requisite qualifications to prove that the unseen system of competing signals implied signals that came from non-Wi-Fi devices. Also that their claim that they were the most reliable wireless connection in the UK referred only to their Home Hub 3 router. The ASA ruled that the advertisement should not be repeated as it is again unless they could support their claims with proof to validate it or have the necessary eligibility regarding the claim.
