UPC to launch broadband for towns in midlands and west
UPC, Telecom and Cable television provider is set to commence high speed broadband in about 6 towns in the west and midlands of the country over the next three weeks following an upgrade to its network of €15 million.
Towns viz Athlone, Sligo, Carlow, Mullingar, Newbridge and Portlaoise are about to acquire fibre powered broadband and high definition TV services of UPC through its cable network. Enabling these networks will let the homes in the towns to experience 30MB broadband speeds which is the fastest available in the country.
Fixed line telephone service of Eircom in these areas may face a tough competition after the launch of this high speed broadband network.
UPC stated that the new investment would create its fibre plied services accessible to about 45,000 homes in addition, making its total to 550,000 for the country. This contributes an upgrade as high as €300 million-plus of its cable network in recent years.
Mark Coan, sales and marketing director of UPC said us that the after a 3 years investment program, the company has completely renovated and rebuilt the cable networks. At the end of March 2010,having over 160,000 broadband customers, UPC will be behind Eircom taking the number two player in the market.
