The north-east provided with FREE broadband connectivity by BT
BT, the largest communications provider in the UK, has provided a 12 months FREE broadband connections to several north-east community groups. This good gesture on the part of BT would certainly help the people in these areas to understand more about internet.
More than 600 organizations, which includes pre-schools, scout groups, family centre etc. were linked to internet as per the telecoms giant’s Community Connections Scheme. Fenham Association of Residents in Newcastle and Shotton IT Resource Centre and Consett Churches Detached Youth Project in County Durham are the latest recipients of FREE broadband.
A spokesman of BT said that more than twenty per cent of the residents in the north-east did not get an opportunity use internet. It is not that people dislike internet but they were not given an opportunity. The rollout of broadband and other schemes did not reach them. This means that the people of these areas miss a lot, on education, healthcare, and financial services. The small businesses in these localities suffer beyond limits due to non-availability of broadband facility.
It is really worth to note that about 8.4 million adults in the UK, which is equal to the population of the country’s five largest cities, are not having any access to web. The mere statement of this fact reveals where we stand when we talk about broadband connectivity.
The regional director for the north-east at BT, Mr. Chris Sayers says that the lack of confidence on the part of the people is one of the main reasons preventing them from using internet and at the same time when someone comes forward to show them how to use internet they welcome it.
