The Ireland city Londonderry gets major breakthrough in fiber broadband.
The telecommunication company BT announced that Londonderry is the first city in the UK and Ireland to have the advanced fiber broadband technology for all its street cabinets. BT happens to be a sponsor of Derry’s year as UK ‘City of Culture’ for the year 2013. The roll out will enable around 40,000 homes and business houses to access the fast internet. Colm O’Neill of BT in charge of Northern Ireland operations remarked that installation of the fiber broadband system is part of the ‘City of Culture’ partnership. Most of the users can make use of the opportunity except a very few who may have some technical problems. The users can enter their telephone numbers in a given BT website to know whether they can have the access. According to Mr. O’Neill, different pricings have been given on an open access basis. Though the service will be costlier by 30%, the increase in speed is enormous, sometimes even 10 to 50 times more. The Ireland city now enjoys better connectivity than London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong etc.
