Scotland to get high speed internet thanks to BT

Tuesday, February 7th 2012

It has been established that internet traffic has increased seven times during the lat five years.

The growth of internet and social media are simply stunning. Around 2 billion users visit the Facebook site; 250 million photos are uploaded to Facebook everyday. 2 billion videos are watched on YouTube everyday. It is presumed that there will be 22.3 million fixed line broadband customers in the UK by the end of 2016, with not less than 33% of them availing high speed services, resulting in voracious demand for bandwidth.

Businesses have to gain much more from faster services. They need everything in the latest communication technology to compete not only in the national market but also globally.

BT wants to provide FTTP and FTTC services to 66% of the UK homes and businesses.
with an investment of GBP 2.5 billion.

FTTC is for laying fiber optic cables from the telephone exchanges to new cabinets on the roadsides. The final connection will be made with the existing copper lines. A download speed of 40 Mbps and uploads sped of 10 Mbps are expected with this arrangement. The download speed will thus be four times more than the current average speed in the country.

As far as FTTP is concerned, fiber optic cable will be laid from exchange straight into the homes or businesses. There will not be any more copper connection. That will ensure n very high speeds. A download speed of 300 Mbps is expected by the end of spring. Innerleithen has the privilege to be the first place in Scotland, set to get the fast connection through FTTP after the up gradation.

It will be a real challenge to meet the needs of a place like Scotland with unfavorable geographical conditions and contrasting lifestyles of subjects. A partnership approach will be worthwhile to make the new generation broadband a reality for the place.
