Digital Economy Act to be reviewed judicially

Wednesday, February 1st 2012

Internet service providers ‘BT Broadband’ and ‘TalkTalk’ are not pleased with the ‘Digital Economy Act’ unveiled in 2010. The act comprised of controversies and invited opposition from various corners.

That is mainly because a clause in the act that gave the right for the court to block a website or ‘IP address’ which violates copyrights or take to file sharing constantly. This can be done even without holding the trial.

The two service providers succeeded in having a judicial review of the act within months of its introduction. The UK court has taken up the appeal of both the service providers.

The service providers have filed twice for their right to appeal against the act. Their request was rejected in last summer. But they put forth their case again in October 2011. Their case was accepted this time.

A spokesperson of BT remarked that the administration is unnecessarily poking the nose on the rights of the service providers and internet users, which is unwarranted. It is not correct to disturb the freedom of expression. That being the case there is no other option left for the service providers except to fight their case legally and that is what they intend to do. They are also doing it in the interest of the subscribers.
