Criticism of BT for being slow in fiber installation is baseless
Optical cabling and express routing are inevitable for super fast broadband. But they are not enough; something more are necessary. They are the fundamental civil and mechanical tools for digging, excavation etc. They include spades and super spades. Without them nothing is possible.
BT, which has undertaken the GBP 2.5 billion fiber plant for satisfying the broadband needs of 66% of the UK population by 2014, has been seriously criticized for being slow.
BT’s Ian Livingstone has put the blame on delay in civil works. In fact, his personnel cut through the runway with shovels, without waiting for the digging by civil engineering teams. This accelerates their work.
The spade is another important tool, which BT uses, which also helps in speeding up the work.
These may look insignificant, but save a lot of time and help in the progress of work. Further it goes on to prove that BT is always doing something or the other in the interest of the nation.
Yet another is by providing plastic bases in fiber cabinets instead of the old method of concrete plinths, which take considerable time for setting, curing etc. The concrete plinths involve huge machineries and up and down movement of vehicles, all of which can be avoided in the case of ready made plastic or polymer plinths which are easy to handle and install in all weather conditions.
The time consumed is a mere two hours instead of the full week in the case of the concrete plinth.
Time can also be saved by avoiding the need of meter installation in the case of electrical power supplies.
BT has not disclosed the particulars about the novel techniques it adopts, but other ISPs agree that BT is in the correct path.
Trefor Davies of Timico stated that as per the Caio Report of 2009, out of the
GBP 29 billion allotted for fiber project, civil engineering works itself will consume as much as GBP 24 billion.
