BT’s Wi-Fi hotspot access point installation crosses 320,000
The service provider BT has introduced not less than 320,000 access points for wireless broadband in public places and private premises within Scotland.
BT claims that its Wi-Fi network, considered to be the largest in Britain, consists of about 3 million hotspots, including about 26,700 in Highlands, 16,700 in Aberdeen, 20,000 in Edinburgh and 26,000 in Glasgow.
This clearly signifies the high dominance of wireless enabled devices like laptops, game consoles, tablets and smartphones.
Almost 440.5 million smartphones were sold worldwide in the third quarter of 2011, indicating a rise of 5.6 in sales compared to the same period in the year 2010. About 60.5 million of these were running on Android, which proved to be the most popular of all operating systems.
Broadband customers of BT and all users of iPads, iPhones, Android, Samsung and BlackBerry smartphones can access BT Wi-Fi hotspots free of charge.
Liz Cameron of the Scottish Chamber of Commerce is full of praise for BT’s efforts. He remarked that Wi-Fi access is vital for not only businesses but also for students, shoppers, tourists and so on. Getting ‘online’ is a part of life for all wherever they are.
Brendan Dick of ‘BT Scotland’ stated that this clearly shows the interest of the service provider in fulfilling the needs of the subjects of the region to be on par with other parts of Great Britain and even Europe.
