BT’s big plans for broadband up gradation in Scotland

Broadband service provider BT is set to undertake its biggest fiber optic cable broadband installation in Scotland. It is intending to spend GBP 2.5 billion for upgrading 34 exchanges in connection with provision of super fast broadband system in Scotland.

About 277,000 homes and commercial establishments will get the benefit, according to the company.

BT’s plan is to provide a speed of 300 Mbps as against the current average connection speed of 6.8 Mbps in the UK, as found out by Ofcom, the regulator.

The exchanges involved include those in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen etc.

Brendan Dick of ‘BT Scotland’ is certain that the investment will pave the way for providing the highest technology of the year for the places and that for the increase in economy of the places mentioned.

It is expected that the subscriber strength may rise to around 685,000 in due course.

The government is all praise for the service provider’s initiative. The Infra structure and Capital Investment Secretary Alex Neil remarked that the government’s deadline for the whole of Scotland for next generation broadband is 2020. At the rapid pace with which BT’s work is in progress, there is no doubt about achieving the target.

He is confident that the economic strategy of the government will be taken care of by BT. .
