BT presses Virgin Media to open up its Ducts
In an interesting turn around, BT the leading fixed-line broadband provider operating in the United Kingdom has urged Virgin Media to follow the precedent set by it by opening up for the competitors, its underground pipe network. BT, which one enjoyed the telecoms monopoly in the country had bowed to the pressure from the Conservative party last month to allow its rival ISPs to use the ducts through which ran its network lines. In one of its statements, BT has sarcastically mentioned that it was remarkabable to see those that had called for BT's opening its cable ducts, themselves not willing to do that. The UK broadband provider added that they called on other ISPs in the country to foolow the lead offered by BT of openning its infrastructure as well as content to its rivals on a fair basis, as competition was a two way road. According to reports, nevertheless the broadband bundle provider Virgin Media seems reluctant to provide any such access called on by BT, citing the support it enjoyed from a previous ruling of Ofcom.
