BT Openreach decides to reduce Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA)

Monday, October 10th 2011

BT Openreach has decided to lower the costs of Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) for other broadband providers. Now, at a reduced cost the rival providers can access BT’s ducts and telegraph poles. Broadband industry stakeholders said that higher wholesale costs could avert service providers from competing against broadband packages of BT. BT has changed the price structure, following a discussion with Ofcom. This move from BT could bring high-speed broadband to rural parts across the UK. When compared to drafts issued earlier, the renewed prices are much lower. Consultation with Ofcom and network trials has resulted in the price modification. Besides, BT has packed up some of its products into their component parts so that providers can choose the service they want. BT Openreach’s Chief Executive, Liv Garfield said that the company was satisfied with the new price change. With lower prices, other companies can create a business case and bid for Broadband Delivery UK funds. She said that the prices could help bring faster broadband to rural areas.
