BT hopes to achieve broadband target ahead of schedule.
BT is confident of providing fiber broadband to 66% of the UK premises in the next three years. It has earmarked GBP 300 million out of its total GBP 2.5 billion investment for expediting the work. About 520 engineers are also being selected to achieve the target.
BT’s efforts will enable the UK to become the country with the best and fastest broadband network in Europe, by 2015.
6 million fiber connections are already made. The figure will rise to 10 million in one year, to 17 million in two years and 25 million in three years. The rival providers are also offered the services on certain payment basis.
Jeremy Hunt, the secretary of state for culture is of the opinion that BT’s efforts will help in the development of new products and services and creation of ample new jobs.
BT is pleased at the government’s intention to allot GBP 530 million for the service in more and more premises in the UK.
In April, the Japanese firm Fujitsu Ltd., BT’s competitor had offered to bring super fast connectivity to 5 million rural homes in the UK. More than GBP 1.5 billion will be required to accomplish this.
