BT focuses on faster broadband for Wales
‘Consumer Focus Wales’ informed that it is necessary for all the areas of Wales including remote villages and rural towns to have fast internet access.
Around 130,000 homes and businesses will be provided with faster broadband access by 2012, accrding to BT, the broadband service provider.
According to Ofcom, the communication regulator, Wales is struggling with very poor connectivity.
‘The Wales Tourism Alliance’ has stated that the non-availability of fast broadband was affecting the tourism, particularly in remote places. It also said that the companies in Wales are unable to compete with others elsewhere due to the low broadband speeds.
However BT has plans to provide download speeds of at least 20 Mbps in rural towns and remote villages of Wales, making use of copper wires.
BT had decided earlier this month to cater to the needs of homes and businesses in Wales including Wrexham, Newport, Pontypridd, Prestatyn and parts of Cardiff and Swansea.
Download speeds of 40 to 100 Mbps may be attained, which will be much more than the current speed of 6.8 Mbps in the UK.
Ann Beynon of ‘BT Wales’ remarked that BT’s work is progressing at a rapid rate. At a time of uncertain economic conditions prevailing in the whole country, BT’s effort will be excellent for one and all in the whole of Wales.
