BT ensures considerable energy savings in broadband infra structure
A new ‘sleep mode’ has been derived by BT, the trial of which is on, which promises two significant advantages. One is that the energy consumption by the broadband system is reduced by almost 30%. The second is that the emission of carbon vapors is considerably restricted.
The so called ‘Cool Broadband’ is being tested at the R & D centre at Martlesham in Suffolk and a telephone exchange close by. The test confirms that there can be energy savings of almost 30%.
The reduction in emission is also confirmed by BT’s Niall Dunne after analyzing the trials.
The broadband will be on ‘always available’ basis and not ‘always on’ basis. That is to say, if the broadband line is 20 Mbit/sec, it will be on only when broadband is being used. When a telephone call is being made than it will go to sleep- mode and only that much necessary for the purpose, say in this case 200 Kbit/sec will be on. This ensures considerable saving in energy. This is indeed a great achievement.
Dunne disclosed that as per the studies BT utilizes almost 70% of the whole of the UK energy.
BT anticipates more technical challenges for the project but is confident of coming out successfully. It is relieved that its energy bills have been lower by GBP 13 million and emission rate has been down by 5%.
BT is set to install 22,000 energy meters and 1,500 building energy management systems, which will help the company to watch and control energy usage and consumption by the broadband infrastructure.
A central system, which is provided with updates by smart meters, controls the air-conditioning and heating systems and information Technology system to ensure their best efficiency.
