BT Broadband in 15 million homes

Tuesday, September 7th 2010

BT revealed that 15 million homes now access broadband over the company's network. The milestone was reached in late August with more than 5 million of those connections being through BT Retail and the rest through the other companies who benefit from BT's network with equivalent access.

What did it take for BT to reach such level ?

BT had 200,000 broadband connections in August 2002.

Given the above, we come to know that the company has added 14.8 million connections in eight years.

This implies that more than 5000 new broadband connections were given per day.

In UK, 99 percent of  homes have access to broadband and the prices are also low. The reason for low prices being a highly competitive market in which BT retail has 27 percent of the share. Broadband availability in UK ranks higher than many other neighbouring countries.

Olivia Garfield, BT strategy director said that success story of broadband in Britain lies in widespread availability, low prices and high rates of adoption. Reports say that vast majority of new customers choose BT Broadband rather than the alternative ones where the prices are higher comparatively.

It's not the end of the story. BT is now investing a further £2.5 billion to run fibre broadband to two thirds of the UK. With that, UK will have the greatest chance of making name in the field of speeds, which is one of the few fields where UK have been behind.
