Broadband boost in Scotland
Superfast broadband will be made available to a significant population including 150,000 Scottish residences and business establishments by next year, thanks to the £2.5 billion investment by BT Broadband.
With this around one million premises in Scotland will have super fast broadband.
BT informed that it will give considerable boost to the local economy.
Brendan Dick of BT Scotland informed that the whole of Scotland will have better entertainment, education, business, social networking, shopping etc and that too together with the installation of fiber broadband.
Alex Neil, the infrastructure secretary, informed that even the remotest area will be catered with high speed broadband.
Superfast broadband is not limited to providing better economy; it improves the life of people in all respects.
BT Openreach, which looks after the network business, intends to make available fiber broadband to 66% of UK before the end of 2014, with the help of a combination of fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTFC) and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technologies.
Wherever fiber broadband is currently available, the firm wants the speed to be increased to 330 Mbps. According to Ofcom, the current average speed in the UK is 7.6 Mbps.
In the meantime, the Scottish government has decided to spend £120 million for faster connectivity in Highlands and Islands. Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is in contact with BT regarding the upgrade. It will be a challenging job as sub-sea cables also will have to be installed apart from laying cables in underground trench.
