BT Calls for Government Backing for Fibre Broadband Rollout

BT Fibre Broadband Rollout AdBT, the prominent fixed-line broadband provider operating in the United Kingdom has come forward to call for sincere involvement from the part of the government into the plans to launch fibre optic next generation broadband services across Britain.

It is also interesting to note that the internet service provider also has taken pain to support the current government's plan to implement a monthly tax of 50 pence on every fixed telephone line in the United Kingdom. According to the broadband provider's view, this tax could prove to be one of the many ways to create funding for the proposed work.

BT's concern on public funding for the fibre broadband rollout can be felt in the words of its chief executive officer, Steve Robinson that to ensure superfast next generation fibre optic broadband rollout by all internet service providers as well as other bodies, a dedicated public funding was much required.

Robinson had put his views in his article that was published in the newspaper the Daily Telegraph. Here, he stated that the financial support of the government would be particularly crucial when it came to extending high speed broadband service to the rural areas of the country.

Robinson further explained in his column that it was worth mentioning that only nations that had the fibre broadband technology extended beyond their urban areas have enjoyed considerable government funding.

The comments of Robertson come following the confirmation from BT Openreach about its plans for a fibre broadband pilot in brownfield sites across Milton Keynes and London. The trial scheme is all set to begin in January 2010.
