It was reported earlier that BT, the prominent fixed-line internet service provider operating in the United Kingdom, had made a complaint against the plans of the government of the UK to indefinitely extend the 3G licenses of the mobile phone firms operating in the country.
Today, it has been almost confirmed that the Labour minister in the government, Peter Mandelson who is virtually in charge of the department for business, skills and innovation, left over by Lord Carter in the middle of 2008, is quiet unlikely to heed to the railing of BT, and is full speed ahead to open up the floodgates for the mobile networks.
However, the interesting part here is that the leading fixed-line broadband provider in the UK might not be bothered a bit by the turn out. This is particularly due to one reason that BT reportedly anticipates a change of government before Lord Mandelson can practically carry out the process of license extension.
BT also believes in not discussing the issues with the telecommunications regulator of the United Kingdom; Ofcom citing one point that it was being caught up in politics with the Tories having forged some sort of alliance with Sky. As the Conservatives very much suspects Ofcom to be a lackey to BT, it is quite likely that it may be emasculated the moment Tories assume power.
