My laptop connects to a wireless router only when the range is shown excellent and not in good. But my friend sitting beside me is able to connect. What could be the problem??

Something is wrong with the wlan card of your machine. As even in ranges less than excellent I am able to connect to router very easily.

Something is not set up correctly here.As i can connect to services where the connectivty is poor as long as there is some form of connectivty you should be able to connect.Try re-configuring it and placing your router somewhere in a high location.

You haven't mentioned which wireless router you are using. Is it netgear or Linksys or some cheap router?

Is the firmware of your wireless router updated? Upgrading to the latest version of the firmware can solve the issue. Check to see if there is any update available and try it.

If this doesn't work, check to see if there is any interference like TV, micro-oven,fluorescent bulbs etc in your room? They can interfere your wireless connectivity so make sure that your wireless devices are away from these sources of electrical interferences.

Since, you both seem to use the same wireless router, there could be clash between your laptop devices. So change the channel on your wireless router and make sure that you both are using different channels on the router.

Sometimes changing the power output settings of your router can solve the issue. If the settings in your wireless router can be modified by some customer firware, you may increase or decrease the power to get the optimum signal. For better coverage, just increase the standard output level. However, this will add more noise to the signal which may slow down the connection speeds.
