Ethernet over Power
Has anyone tried this? Personally I think its great, I have a pair of 85Mbit plugs. Just plug one near your router, put an ethernet cable into the router and the other end into the plug, then do the same where you want the network to come out, within seconds a nice stable network connection.

Works great for me, I reciently moved from a 2 floor house to a 3 floor house, wireless router is downstairs and the XBox 360 on the top floor. The wireless signal is pretty pants so I wanted a way to stream video to the XBox 360. This was hard enough with 802.11G at the best of times but with these plugs its childs play. Next step for me is to upgrade to the 200MBit ones so I can stream HD movies up stairs.

I still use my wireless for the laptops that dont need a fast connection, but I'm more than happy with my HomePlugs.

Sounds to me like you have all setup the right way. That is what I would have done as well to ensure that all computers are covered and the xbox too I suppose.

They say that the meter at the entry to your house will stop the signal going out onto the grid. However all the signals are encrypted to keep your's safe even if it does leak is change the encryption key.

I suppose thats not too bad so it sort of works like a hybrid of wireless and ethernet ?, it's a wonder the electric board isn't giving us cheap broadband!

Even I am using ethernet over power but the problem that comes is it gives the same ip to all machines and when it comes to xbox you cannot connect two xbox to live with same ip.

^ Thats interesting.

I only discovered this possibility a couple months back and was surprised to read how fast and well it performed.

Great point on the electric companies, wonder why it isn't possible. But it sure allows a great number of possibilities.

Shame about the IP issue, guess that's why schools are using it, it would be a big budget saver for them .

Yes this is called masking and many users can use the same ip saving money and this is being used everywhere and even in wimax there is one ip to all machines.

Are you sure it gives one IP? Externally it will but so will any other network connection on the same network as thats how NAT works on the internal network it will either use a static IP or DHCP.

More sounds like a case of bad configuration if multiple machines are being given the same internal IP, do you have a DHCP server running?

Does it work if you have more than one ringmain?

It's an interesting idea, though it's slower than a normal wired network. I would possibly use it to connect the desktop upstairs to our router downstairs, but i'm not sure if it will work with two ringmains.
