Good upload speed for better VoIP!
If you have any problem with VoIP, especially, the problem of latency, your ISP and your broadband package may be causing factors.

Thing is, most ISPs offer you packages with nice download speed but may not give you good upload speed. Most of the packages may feature upload speed which is just one-tenths of download speed. This will definitely affect the voice quality.

If you are still a dial-up user, take note of this point.

What would be the rate at which the upload speed would be as compared with the download speed ? lets say the upload speed is 50% of the total broadband . What would be the upload in a %?

I don't understand what you are asking?

The upload speed varies per a provider and per a package. If you pay enough, you can get a package with the same download and upload speeds.

Your ISP should be able to tell you what the upload speed is somewhere on their web site - my old package was 10Mb down / 384Kb up, for example. This increased to 20Mb down, I think the upstream was only upgraded a little bit though.

Really, the percentage up / down doesn't matter as long as your upload speed is 'good enough' - I can use skype just fine on those speeds and quality is pretty good. It isn't so good on a friends DSL package where he only has around 100Kb upload.

Do you want to go back to days when Offices were using dialup for their networks? VoIP could be in messy in that case though that is not the case in present days when you get enough bandwidth

Yes, the upload speed is usually a lot lower than the upload speed. As I said, you have to pay a lot to get an upload speed the same as your download speed.

I have an upload speed of 260 kbps which is almost 10% of my download speed , but I don't have any problems when using voip.My previous connection though had latency issues and whenever I'd call them up to get it sorted ,it'd work fine only to create problems after two hours.
