Belkin ADSL modem/router not compatible with Virgin broadband?
Hello all, I hope you might be able to help me.

I currently get my broadband through my BT phoneline (can't get cable as I'm not in a cable area). My service provider is Virgin Media.

I bought a brand-new Macbook last week and want to set up wireless in my home.

I bought a Belkin G+ modem/router for ADSL connection. However, it doesn't work. The router/modem itself seems fine, all lights are on, and it shows the Macbook has connected. The Macbook is fine, and has picked up the connection (as indicated by router).

Yet when I get to the whole setup phase via internet brower (to configure router) it won't let me past the password screen. The instructions say "The first time you log on, you won't have a password so just press submit." When I do this, it just says "incorrect password." Incidentally, it does say in the top corner of the screen "Not connected" with a red bar.

I phoned Belkin, and the techie said the problem was that the Belkin router/modem is ADSL, while my Virgin Media service is only DSL. Subsequently I need a different router as they are not compatible.

This sounds a bit fishy to me, I wasn't even aware there was a difference between ADSL and DSL.

Is anyone able to advise me whether what the techie says is true, or whether it's a load of rubbish? I don't want to get a different router and find out I get the same problem.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

By the way, I understand that there is a history of problems with Belkin products and Virgin media. Would I be better off getting a different make?

Thanks

James

I must admit i had a Belkin router it was high speed and very reliable. You could try resetting the router with the button at the back of your router then re-configure all the settings. I got rid of mine to find it was my ISP at fault not my router.
