Modem.
I need to setup a home network and want to know that can a modem serve the purpose of I have to buy a router only.

Ok if you want to set up a home network i'm assuming your ISp will provide a modem for you because if do not have a modem then you can't get a connection from the internet. Then if you do have your router you could set up your connections this way if you would not want to use a server then connect your pc to router which is connected to your modem, use a cross over cable connection and it should work fine. Follow the hos to set up internet connection steps in your control panel if you use a Win Xp OS.

Your Internet Service Providor should provide you a modem.If they haven't i would contact them and see if they do as this is essential for a home network.As you have to connect your wireless router to your modem.Then configure your wireless router to your ISPs data.Then connect your computers.
