Netgear.
I was using netgear router but the range is really poor as I am not getting any signal in just a room beside it.

I think many have had the same problem. I would have to say that I tend to stay away from netgear for that very reason.

Use cisco/linksys for best range and also d-link is fine so change your netgear and shift to some other better brand.

Doubt its much to do with the router itself, but here are a few things to check
  • The antenna isnt broken
  • The router isnt too near any other electronic equipment that may interfere
  • The router or laptop isnt near an operating Microwave
  • Your not using cordless phones (They on the whole use the same radio spectrum as WIFI and cause interferance)
  • Check the antenna on the reciving end.
  • Try it in a different place, the wall between the rooms could be absorbing/reflecting the signal

When people cant recieve signals its normally the reciever thats the issue not the transmitter.

Jenni,

Then what happens in the case where this all of the above listed items are not a problem, and the router works with other peoples connections. How would you handle than one. Just curious to know.

thanks for any help in advance.

You can use repeater if you need range far from router as the rays are blocked by walls and so repeaters provide the best solution.

That is very unusual to say your range is normally affected by walls and when your a long distance away from it.This shows how bad quality they are i would complain to netgear see if you get any compensation. Then ask for a refund from the store you bought it from and get a belkin high fast router.
