| Basically so few people use Linux on the Desktop compared to Windows most virus writers just dont bother.
Is it any safer? Yes and no, its safer because most virus writers dont write stuff for Linux but when it gets a big enough market share they you will have similar problems on Linux as you do with Windows.
There are quite a few features on Linux that make it fairly secure, however so has Windows and you tend to find most users turn them off or bypass them so they can have their trojan infected Smilies for IM.
So for now Linux is safer, but dont kid yourself that its going to stay that way, as Mac users are just starting to find out.
Computers are only secure if the users infront of them allow it to be.
