Online games.
I play online games and for that I have to switch off my firewall. Is there any such way to allow connections to certain IP addresses. Please help.

Yes its obvious. If you'll remove the firewall then your computer will become vulnerable and I would advice to use virtual lan software and there you'll not need to shutdown your firewall.

Are you sure you just don't need to forward some Ports on your machine. This would leave the firewall active.

When you see the IP address of the games server see if there is another number after the IP address ie:-

80.543.765.87:12567

the 12567 signifies the port number, so you should just forward this port, which will leave the rest of the firewall intact.

I would NEVER completely disable my firewall. If yours as logs - have a look at them, you may be extremely shocked at how many nasties it has protected you from.

That is correct, there are ways around that so that you do not have to disable your firewall at all. I would definitely make sure that you are covered somehow.

Which firewall do you use? With a lot of firewalls these days it's as simple as telling it 'let thisgame.exe do what it wants' and it will let you connect. If you let us know your firewall software, we'll be able to offer more specific advice.

If you do not already, i would reccommend the free ZoneAlarm firewall, as it replaces the basic windows one, and allows programs to do what saubryn said above, and just let certain files do as they like. Up until i moved to LInux, i used it.

yeah moving to Linux was a very good choice, as you do not have to worry about those types of things when using it. I cannot wait until I have my Linux machine running the way I want.

Cool. What Distro do you use? Im on Ubuntu 7.04, and i love it.
However, this is going off topic slightly.
I did some research, and Zone Alarm will allow games to run what they need , it will pop up once, but after that it wont get in your way.

I like the way it pop's up after it's installation.

Asks whether X program should be granted permission to either access the internet and sometimes whether a program should be allowed to run as a server (such as for a peer 2 per program). Click the 'remember this setting' tick box, then OK and it won't bother you again - think of it as it's learning.

The longer you have it installed the less it bothers you as it knows which programs you want to allow access.
