I would never assume that something is safe. Since the router is the foundation of any network , protecting it must be the first option you look at.

10 router settings (gotten from a friend) that you can use to make your network more secure.

1. Turn off UPnP
2. Change your admin password
3. De-active SSID broadcast
4. Turn on the DMZ
5. Filter MAC addresses
6. Customize the SSID
7. Updateyour firmware
8. Reset the factory default
9. Engage WEP
10. Activate WPA

Great post by attagirl.

Also you could download Nessus and run an exploit scan on your IP address. This will tell you of any known exploits to which you are vulnerable.

There are various hacking tools provided by yahoo and you can check from that whether your computer is safe or not. Also there are many tools from other sites which you can search from google.
