Block the spam messages
Spam is a growing problem worldwide. Sophos released a list of world's top twelve spam (junk e-mail) producing countries for the second quarter of this year.
UK occupies 10th place up by three places when compared to the previous quarter. Nearly three percent of global spam is being relayed from UK. This is definitely a disgraceful sign of UK broadband industry.(The USA is the cause of nearly 20 percent of spam worldwide!)

Sophos attributes the growing spam relaying to the failure of ISPs to take adequate measures to prevent spams as well as the lack of consolidated effort from users.

Many consumers hunt for cheap broadband services overlooking the quality of service. One thing is sure - not every cheap broadband provider can provide basic security for their price. We have to decide what we want.

Finally, how many of us block the spam messages - this is the most efficient way to deal with the spam - instead of reading and responding to them

My web host provides a spam filtering service. I use that, and then I use the spam filtering in Thunderbird (my email client) on top. Between the two of them, only a handful of spam messages make it into my inbox each day.

I wonder if user operated SMTP was counted in that survey. I've ran an SMTP server from time to time, and a lot of the default setups are completely open, and really attractive to spammers. I think the companies offering 'easy to use' SMTP servers should really do something about that.

I work for a company that provides email services (amounst many other things) and we use MessageLabs to filter our spam. Have to say generally its pretty good I get perhaps 1 - 2 spam messages a month.

Its not a cheap service and is aimed more at business users but it certainly gets rid of spam.

It really hurts to use a spam blocker as its a costly service so I would recommend to use the default sapm blocker of the mail server.

Yes why to waste money when you can save it. Just use gmail and they really have a good spam blocker by default for free.

I agree with both ceprateek and net.pro as I don't need spam blocker as hotmail provides it for free to all of its users and also yahoo has a very good spam blocker which can also be configured.
