HD Ready is a marketing thing, it means the device with the sticker on it is capable of recieving High Def television of the type transmitted in the UK, HD is a generic term for some kind of High Defination signal, either 720p(rogressive scan), 1080i(nterlaced), 1080p.
At the moment to get High Defination TV you need a High Def capable TV (Normally has the HD Ready sticker) and a High Def input this is normally from Sky HD, Virgin HD, Freeview HD (Limited trials in the London area, not due int the rest of the UK until around 2012), HD Games console (XBox 360 or PS3), HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
Personally I have a HD 42" Plasma with an XBox 360 for High Def gaming, and an HD-DVD drive for the XBox 360 for High Def movies.
Is it an improvement? Hell yes, I've pretty much stopped buying normal DVDs (Only stuff I want that isnt on HD-DVD and is never likely to be will I buy on DVD now), the "Big Screen Cinema experience" just doesnt have the appeal anymore as my HD-DVDs and Plasma looks much better than your average cinema.
