There are some technologies available round the globe which also give cheap and reliable connection like:
1. CDMA netconnect
2. GPRS
3. Edge
4. HSDCD

I have heard about Edge. I think it's what the iPhone is currently using, but a lot of people prefer 3G simply because its faster.
