Can I give up my phone line?
I am with Virgin Media. I have been using Skype for making VoIP calls to landline and mobile numbers.

My question is, can I abandon my phone line as I now have VoIP?

I am also looking for a better VoIP provider, if there is any?

Thanks

Yes, I wouldn't get rid of your phone line. As hazephase said, you need the phone line for the VOIP to go along.

Also there are lots of VOIP providers, but Skype being the biggest gives it the possibility to provide the cheapest call. Plus the people you wanted to call may have to install this software as well - is it free or would they have to pay for it just to receive your calls.

You can but VOIP connections, but they aren't really feasible unless you want to set up your own exchange with a PBX software such as Asterix.

Of course you can give up your phone line, you will just have to get a Broadband line which is of course exactly the same as a phone line you just cant make or receive calls on it.

This will cost you exactly the same as the phone line you didn't want in the first place.

So basically no you cant. However if your neighbour has an unsecured access point and fast internet you can give the lot up and use theirs :-) (Not that this is recommended and in most countries is illegal)

It seems everyone missed the point. Since, Dionysis is getting broadband via cable, ofcourse, he can give up his phone line.

But, when you are with cable broadband and also have VoIP service, you need to consider two things, before you ever think about quitting your telephone line.

1. Check whether your VoIP provider gives you access to 999 emergency services. Conventionally, not all voIP providers give that facility.
2. Even if you are enabled with 999 services via VoIP, what will you do, when there is no power?

My general question, do you feel it is convenient to use VoIP for every calls you wish to make?
