For a cable broadband connection first you need a cable connection. The equipments you need are the cable broadband modem,a datacable which comes with it and some filters.Nothing to worry... Most of the ISP will provide all these.Think twice or thrice before you choose a package and sign up a contract with the ISP.

Well you would need an ADSL/SDSL (Phone Line), a modem or router for connectivty.Microfilters in every phone socket. This would be essential for any type of internet broadband you require no matter what ISP your joining. These are the essential and basic steps for broadband.

I am afraid the question is about cable broadband and phone line/micro filters are not needed to setup cable broadband connection. Mircrofilters and splitters are used only for ADSL connection not for cable broadband.

For cable broadband, you need cable broadband modem (which may be inbuilt with set-top box or can be separate device) and Virgin Media offers it free when you sign up to its package. You may require router if you want to share single broadband connection among two or more PCs.

As jipsonnj said the cable broadband needs cable connection, cable modem, data cables and the microfilters. Now virgin is offering fibre optic cable,so it is faster than the normal cable connection.
