Don't let the adds mislead you
There have been lots of compaints form the members of the pubic with very poor speeds , in the last 12 months ISP have been promising speeds of up to 8Mbps .
The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has investigated several cases of misleading promotions, most recently asking Bulldog to make it clear in its adverts that speed was dependent on how far away from the exchange people lived.

You will find that anywhere you go. I am not one bit surprised with the misleading advertisements that are marketed to unknowing consumers. I think that it is the responsibility of the user to make sure that they are getting the speeds that they are paying for.

Now I know that they can only give an estimated, and each computer will respond differently based on its specs and other variables, but when you have big gaps there is a problem.

As someone who work's for an ISP offering 8Meg Max services, I'm going to defend the ISPs a bit.

Most ISPs should and most I've seen do specify that this is not a guaranteed speed service, and that in an ideal world in ideal conditions you will get 8Meg.

I know we do explain all of this in detail to our customers before they sign up, even running the Estimated Speed test and telling them the results.

Most ISPs I've tried to sign up to give you a pretty fair indication of what you may actually recieve.

The cost of these 8Meg products is normally around that of the 2meg products they replaced, and most people get more than 2Meg.

Yes most people get a raw deal in the fact they dont get 8Meg, however they do on the whole get a speed faster than they would have had before the Max products were introduced.

Yes one has to be careful and whats most misleading is "UPTO". They say upto 2 mbps and promise very less.

I remember when Bulldog first came out with their 8MB offer and a few of the serious techies got into this and they were massively disappointed with everything that Bulldog provided from that - not just the customer service but the speed.

Yes everyone is profit minded and especially these ISP's. Now government should do something and ask them to promise a certain minimum speed.

Advertisements cannot mislead a person who has self good knowledge about that product, as they can mislead in that cases only where market research is not done.
