For those people that are new here. What is the best way to determine what your broadband speed is? Are there things you can do to ensure that you have the fastest speed available.

The trouble with any Speed test site is it doesnt always test your connection. speedtest.net is good because it has mutilple test sites so you can do the test several times on different servers in different locations.

Some tests though only test from 1 location, meaning all its testing is the link between 1 site and your machine. The route between the two could be routed via a cheap (but slow) route slowing things down, you could get hit by your line contention at the time you do the test etc

Fast tests are reasonably reliable, however slow tests do not always mean you have slow broadband.

Another thing to remember if you have a MAX type product (IE one of the Upto 8Mbit) for the first 2 weeks after installation the line speed will fluctuate a lot as it tries to find the fastest speed where errors are minimal, so speed tests done during that time can be unreliable.
