Setting up broadband to work with Linux
Someone emailed me with a question on how easy it was to set up broadband to work with Linux. This was my response:

I found it straightforward to set up broadband access with Linux, though it took some time to get the hardware to work and to put in place the security I wanted. I didn't want to use USB to connect, so I bought a network card that worked with Linux, it took some fine-tuning to get RedHat to detect my network card though. The engineer came and set up the systems to work with Windows (I have a dual-boot machine). I just set up Linux to find the DHCP server.

Not only this friend.. You should set up an IPTables firewall to filter out malicious packets (http://www.google.com/search?q=simpl...ables+firewall and http://www.codeblast.com/~gert/linux/firewall.html , http://www.seifried.org/lasg/firewall/iptables.html ) and limit the services running on your machine.

Hi,

I am interested to setup broadband with linux. I have seen you did not have any problems. But which provider did you use?

Thanks

I subscribe to Telewest's blueyonder service with a network card (not USB). It's no longer the cheapest broadband service, but installation is free (as of October 2003). Hopefully as prices fall further they will reduce the monthly charge, which they haven't touched so far. I'm not holding my breath as the service provider Telewest is fairly debt-ridden.

I also have Tiscali Braodband and like you I have found that Tiscali seems to have a mental block when it comes to Linux.

I use caddies so that I can run Windows XP or Linux Mandriva on the same machine so if I have problems with one system I can easily swop over and have no conflicts.

I've just installed Mandriva 2006 on a win98SE dual boot system. The mandriva setup *appears* to have detected the modem successfully, although so far I've had no joy at connecting.

I use ethernet to connect to the modem - I'd recommend it for Linux.

I have finally solved the problem.
I dumped the SAGAM f@st 800 and bought for £32 a MENTOR MR4C/UK wired x4 adsl router/modem.
I didn't use the uSB connection, just the mains power pack and a cat 5 cable to 4 PCs (Linux only, Triple boot, Xp only and 98se only). Two are laptops.
