Traffic shaping
Hi,
My question is related to traffic shaping. This term is often confusing as I do not find much about it in the providers' web sites. Where can I find the details about the traffic management of a provider?

Sometimes they have a seperate link at the bottom of their site one saying traffic the other management. However, only a few providors have this if your certain you can find any information about this. You need to contact your internet service providor for more information on it.

You will find it in the fair usage policy (FUP) of the ISP. Every ISP will have their own FUP which has guidelines for usage especially during peak hours.

Hope this news article help you to better understand traffic shaping:

All ISPs put the fair usage policy in small print so you need to go through the FAQ carefully in their sites. As FUP defines the download limits during peak hours and also inform us about the cost of extra usage, it should be studied before you enter any contract with the ISP

To make things clear, it is always better to talk to your ISP before signing up to a package. If you sign up to unlimited package, the price of the package often indicates what service quality, speed you will get. If you pay more for an unlimited package, it will mean there is not so much traffic shaping. Low end packages will have traffic management especially if you go for heavy downloads during peak hours.

Traffic shaping helps the ISPs to reduce their costs and so they block the ports that give access to P2P sites or such bandwidth hungry services. Tiscali is a good example for it. They acquired Pipex last year and are slowly switching the customers of Pipex to their network which is controlled by their traffic management. Certainly, this must be vexing for Pipex customers.
