Information on types of broadband
I am a newbie to broadband. I would like to know what types of broadband are available in the UK. Which technology offers high speed broadband like 16 Mbps or 24 Mbps?

What maximum speed cable broadband can offer? I also think about taking up a Virgin package.

Thanks.

I think you have come to the right place. This site has a detailed comparision table that has the latest broadband packages and up-to-date details which you may find in a few sites. Have a look at them carefully before you choose the package suitable for you.

Read broadband guides and reviews which provide information and details on packages which are categorized by speed, by type and by technology.

There are various technologies used in broadband - ADSL, ADSL+2, cable, mobile and wireless broadband. There are also new emerging technologies like FTTH which promise speed up to 100 Mbps.

Presently, ADSL+2 offers the highest speed and broadband providers like Be, UK online,Sky and Virgin Media offer the best speed - between 16 Mbps and 24 Mbps.

Some test trials by Virgin, Pipex and Entanet (recently) are currently going on in selected areas in the UK.

Well, you need to check availability of provider/package in your area before you pick up the right package for you.

Cable broadband can offer high speeds, as Virgin Media size XL offers upto 20 Mbps. If you wish to compare virgin packages and their bundles, have a look at the comparision table.

Optical fibre is the latest technology used in countries like Japan, Korea to deliver superfast broadband with speed up to 100 Mbps. It is found from a survey that the BT lines are pretty old and unsuitable for delivering high speeds.

Despite this, these ISPs offer IPTV services for very expensive prices. The service quality is still lagging behind Korea or Japan. This is time for UK ISPs to upgrade their technologies to earn better customer satisfaction.
