Virgin phone line

Greetings internet experts,

Can anyone tell me the answer to the following question - I have my phone line from Virgin Media does this mean that I am limited to Virgin in terms of an internet provider? If not what other internet providers can I use? I don't find the Virgin broadband deal particularly appealing and don't want to have to fork out to get a BT line installed.

As you may have guessed I'm know little about such things. I have heard that aside from having a cable coming into my house there are other means of getting access to the internet including wireless providers. Does anyone know of any such providers who offer competitive rates??

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
